GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The top-seeded and top-ranked Stanford University women's tennis team posted an impressive 4-0 win over 17th-ranked Harvard University in the third round of the NCAA Team Championship on Thursday afternoon at the University of Florida. The Cardinal improved to 23-1 on the year, while the Crimson dropped to 19-4.
The Cardinal, which has not dropped a point through the first three rounds of the 64-team event, will face seventh-ranked and eighth-seeded Georgia (19-4) in the quarterfinals on Friday at 2:00 p.m. (ET)/11:00 a.m. (PT). Georgia advanced with a 4-0 win over 12th-ranked and ninth-seeded Kentucky (23-8) on Thursday. Stanford leads the all-time series with Georgia 14-3.
The Cardinal, which has advanced to the quarterfinals in all 22 years since the event's inception in 1982, had little trouble with a Crimson squad that entered the day with a 10-match winning streak.
Stanford first took the doubles points with victories at Nos. 1 and 3. Top-ranked Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ) and Erin Burdette (Jackson, GA) recorded an 8-5 win over 47th-ranked Courtney Bergman and Susanna Lingman at No. 1, and Emilia Anderson (Cincinnati, OH) and Story Tweedie-Yates (Redmond, WA) locked up the point with an 8-0 triumph over Sanja Bajin and Lyly Cao Minh at No. 3.
Tweedie-Yates then gave the Cardinal a 2-0 lead with a, 6-1, 6-0 win over Minh at No 6. Freshman Alice Barnes (Cambridge, England) then moved the two-time defending champions one point away from the victory with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Bajin at No. 4.
Burdette, who is ranked 27th in the country, wrapped up the Stanford win with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over 78th-ranked Eva Wang at No. 3.
