Cardinal Men & Women Finish Second at Pac-10 Championships

Los Angeles, Ca - Lauren Fleshman, Alicia Craig and Sara Bei finished 1-2-3 in the 5,000 meters to power the Stanford women's track & field team to a second place finish at the 2003 Pacific-10 Conference Championships on Sunday at USC's Cromwell Field at Katherine B. Loker Stadium.

Fleshman, the two-time NCAA 5,000 meter champion, captured her second straight league title in the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:37.52. Craig, a redshirt freshman and the winner in Saturday's 10,000 meters, was timed in 16:38.82 while Bei was clocked at 16:38.91. The 24 points scored by the Cardinal trio of 5,000 meter runners helped Stanford chalk up 140 points compared to the champion UCLA Bruins with 155. The 140 points is the most scored by a Cardinal team in Pac-10 competition, and the sixth straight year that Stanford has scored 100 or morepoints.

Fleshman completed her day with a second place finish in the 1,500 meters. Fleshman was timed in 4:14.68. UCLA's Lena Nilsson of UCLA won the conference title for a second straight year with a time of 4:13.21. Fleshman's time was a career-best and fourth-best all-time at Stanford.

The Stanford women's 1,600 meter relay team pulled a mild upset with a first place finish in a time of 3:35.10. Arizona State finished second at 3:35.23. Pre-meet favorite UCLA did not compete.

Freshman Nashonme Johnson set a frosh school record in the 200 meters with a second place finish at 23.85. That time is also fifth-best in school history. Natasha Mayers of USC won the competition at 23.32.

Three Cardinal male runners captured conference titles on Sunday. Freshman Justin Romaniuk captured the 800 meter crown with a time of 1:49.86 to edge out Rapheal Asafo-Agyei of USC at 1:49.89. Grant Robison is the 2003 Pac-10 champion in the 1,500 meters (3:44.42) edging out USC's Tomasz Babiskiewiecz who finished second at 3:45.85. Louis Luchini added a second Pac-10 title with a victory in the 5,000 meters (14:06.67). Robison finished third (14:07.58). On Saturday, Luchini captured the 10,000 meter Pac-10 title.

Nick Welihozkiy finished second in the hammer (221-1, 67.38m). Adam Kriz of Oregon won the Pac-10 title at 221-3 (67.45m).

Solomon Welch set a freshman school record with a leap of 50-9 1/2 (15.48m) in finishing fourth in the triple jump.

The Stanford men finished second in the team competition with 128 points. USC won the 2003 Pac-10 title with 139 points.

Stanford will host the NCAA West Regionals on May 30-31 at Cobb Track & Angell Field.
