Stanford has won 11 of its last 12 games overall and 11 of its past 12 series ... The Cardinal needs just one more victory to wrap up its ninth consecutive 40-win campaign ... Stanford has clinched its first outright Pac-10 title since 1999 (Stanford shared the Pac-10 crown with Arizona State and UCLA in 2000) by finishing with an 18-6 conference record after winning eight of its last nine conference games and posting an 11-1 road record in Pac-10 play ... Stanford has won 19 conference championships (17 Pac-10, includes Southern Division and shared titles) in school history and finished either first or second in the conference 21 times in the last 23 years ... Stanford is now among the nation's top five teams in all four major national polls after jumping two spots to No. 5 in both the latest Baseball America and Sports Weekly/ESPN polls released May 19 ... STANFORD BASEBALL QUICK INDIVIDUAL NOTES
Carlos Quentin leads the team and ranks third in the Pac-10 with a .392 batting average ... Quentin, who was named one of five finalists for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award on May 6 and one of 12 semifinalists for the Rotary Smith Award on May 16, is attempting to become the first Stanford player to hit .400 or better since David McCarty hit .420 in 1991 ... Quentin has a current 11-game hit streak (5/3 - 5/23) and has hit safely in 39 of his last 41 games (.419, 70-167) ... Quentin also paces the team in hits (82), doubles (23), walks (32), hit-by-pitches (12) and on-base percentage (.492) ... Ryan Garko, a Johnny Bench Award national semifinalist, is the team's leader in homers (14), RBI (75), total bases (141), slugging percentage (.688), multiple-hit games (25), multiple-RBI games (22), sacrifice flies (6) and extra-base hits (33) ... Stanford won for the 11th time in its last 12 games with a 9-4 victory over Cal Poly in the opener of a non-conference series played before a season-high crowd of 4017 that was treated to fireworks after the game at Sunken Diamond on Friday. John Hudgins picked up his ninth victory of the season to move into a tie for the Pac-10 win lead and the 20th of his career, limiting the Mustangs to one unearned run and three hits over the first 6.0 innings.
Brian Hall (3-5, 2B, SB) had three hits to pace Stanford's 13-hit attack, recording his fourth consecutive three-hit game and extended his hit streak to a season-high-tying seven games. Donny Lucy (2-3, 2 RBI), Ryan Garko (2-4, 2B, RBI) and Jed Lowrie (2-4, 2B, RBI) had a pair of hits each for the Cardinal with Lucy tying a career-high by scoring three runs. Jonny Ash added a pair of RBI on a sacrifice fly and the team's first successful suicide squeeze of the season in the sixth inning. Sam Fuld (12) and Carlos Quentin (11) extended hit streaks with Quentin hitting safely for the 39th time in his last 41 games.
The victory left Stanford one win short of its ninth consecutive 40-win season as the Cardinal defeated Cal Poly for the fifth straight time and improved to 41-5 all-time versus the Mustangs (since 1949).
Hudgins' 6.0 innings of work marked the 15th time in his Pac-10 high 17 starts this season that he has lasted at least 6.0 innings. He is also the Pac-10's leader in innings pitched (123.1), strikeouts (110) and complete games (5).
Cal Poly starter Josh Kougl (1-9) took the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) and 10 hits over the first 6.0 innings.
Scott Anderson was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Mustangs, while Billy Saul (2-4, RBI) also had a pair of hits and Cory Tallion drove in two runs.
Garko struck out twice in the contest, going down swinging in the third and seventh innings, to break a streak of 81 consecutive official at bats and 23 games without a strikeout. He still has more home runs (14) on the season than strikeouts (13). Despite the two strikeouts, Garko's two-hit game marked his team-leading 25th multiple-hit contest of the season.
STANFORD CAL POLY SERIES HISTORYStanford leads the all-time series, 41-5 (since 1949), after winning last night's series opener, 9-4. Last year, the Cardinal swept a three-game set at Sunken Diamond (March 1-3; W, 8-6; W, 18-5; W, 11-3). The win streak over the Broncos extends back to five when the Cardinal pulled out an 11-10 win at Sunken Diamond in the second meeting between the teams in 2001 (5/8/01). Cal Poly's last victory in the series came in the 2001 season-opener for both teams when the Mustangs surprised the Cardinal in San Luis Obispo, 6-5 in 12 innings.
