Stanford will open the 2003 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship by hosting Richmond, UC Riverside and Illinois-Chicago in an NCAA Regional at Sunken Diamond from Friday, May 30 - Sunday, June 1. Stanford is hosting an NCAA Regional for the eighth consecutive year and the 12th time in school history. The Cardinal also earned the No. 6 national seed, the fifth straight season the Cardinal has been awarded with a national seed.

"This will be a good NCAA Regional field," said Stanford head coach Mark Marquess. "Every team still playing at this time of the year is playing well. I'm happy to have earned a national seed because if we are able to win this Regional, we would have the opportunity to host a Super Regional."

Stanford (41-15) is the top seed in the double-elimination Regional and will play fourth-seeded Illinois-Chicago (39-16) in its 2003 postseason opener on Friday at 6:00 pm, PT (Game 1). Stanford is making its 24th NCAA Tournament appearance after earning an automatic berth by winning the regular season Pac-10 title. The Cardinal is also looking to extend its school record string of consecutive College World Series trips to five. Stanford has won two CWS titles (1987, '88), finished as runners-up twice (2000, '01) and made 14 appearances in Omaha. Illinois-Chicago will be making its first NCAA Regional appearance in school history after winning both the Horizon League regular season and tournament titles. The teams will be meeting for the first time.

Second-seeded Richmond (46-13) and third-seeded UC Riverside (40-15) will open the Regional on Friday at 2:00 pm, PT (Game 2). Richmond won its first Atlantic-10 Conference title and fourth conference championship in school history, while UC Riverside finished third in the Big West Conference.

The Regional will continue on Saturday with three games. Saturday's first matchup (Game 3) will feature the losers of Friday's two contests in an elimination game at 11:00 am, PT. The winners of Friday's games will play for the right to advance to the Regional championship at 3:00 pm, PT (Game 4). The winner of Game 3 will play the loser of Game 4 in an elimination game (Game 5) at 7:00 pm, PT.

Sunday's championship game (Game 6) will begin at 1:00 pm, PT. A second championship game (Game 7), if necessary, will follow at approximately 5:00 pm, PT.

All session passes for the NCAA Regional at Sunken Diamond will go on sale beginning Tuesday, May 27, at the Stanford Ticket Office or by calling 1-800-STANFORD.
