For Stanford, Ca - Alan Culpepper, the 2002 United States 5,000 meter champion, ran the fastest 10,000 meters in the world this year to highlight Friday night's action at the Cardinal Invitational at Cobb Track & Angell Field.
Culpepper pulled away from a small group of runners in the last 300 meters to win in a time of 27:41.90.
In the women's 10,000 meters, Ardiana Fernandez, representing Posso International, also produced the world's fastest time this year. Fernandez cruised to victory in a time of 31:13.75.
Several Stanford athletes enjoyed solid performances. Freshman Ryan Hall ran his first 1,500 meters of the year and responded with a time of 3:43.37, an NCAA West regional qualifying time. Dan Gibson also qualified for Regionals in the 1,500 meters (3:45.72).
Grant Robison and Seth Hejny earned berths in the Regionals in the 5,000 meters with respective times of 13:41.82 and 14:06.51.
On Saturday (5/3/03), Stanford will host the Big Meet against California. Field events start at 3:50 p.m. while the running events start at 5:00 p.m.
