  • Stanford will next play at the 2003 College World Series on Sunday, June 15 (6 pm, CT/4 pm, PT) versus the winner of Friday night's Cal State Fullerton-Louisiana State game (Game 2). Sunday's game will be broadcast live by ESPN2.
  • Stanford was swept in a three-game series at Cal State Fullerton earlier this season from January 31 - February 2 (L, 3-7; L, 2-10; L, 2-8) but beat the Titans the last time they met in postseason action with a 3-2, 13-inning victory in a Regional opener at Stanford on May 31, 2002. Stanford has also won the last two meetings between the teams at the College World Series, claiming a pair of victories on June 10 and 13, 2001 (W, 5-2, 10 inn; W, 4-1). Stanford leads the all-time series, 39-32.
  • Stanford and Louisiana State last played in the 2000 CWS championship game with LSU coming away with a dramatic 6-5 victory, scoring three times in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game at 5-5 before picking up the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Louisiana State leads Stanford in the all-time series, 3-1, with the only Cardinal victory coming during Stanford's first CWS championship run with a 6-5, 10-inning win in an elimination game in Omaha on June 5, 1987. Louisiana State beat the Cardinal twice in the 1997 CWS on June 1 and 4 (L, 5-10; L, 9-13).
  • Should Stanford win on Sunday, it would advance to its fifth consecutive bracket final and next play on Wednesday, June 18 (1 pm, PT; ESPN2). Should the Cardinal lose on Sunday, it would next play in an elimination game on Tuesday, June 17 (1 pm, PT; ESPN).

  • Sam Fuld (3-4, 2B, SB) had three hits and now has 18 in his CWS career, moving into a tie for fifth-place on the career CWS hit list and just five shy of the CWS career record of 23 set by Keith Moreland of Texas from 1973-75. Fuld, the only Stanford player to have been named twice to an All-CWS team (2001, '02), now has a career .474 CWS batting average (18-38).
  • Fuld has an updated career batting average of .356 (282-793) to rank tied for fourth on the all-time list. Fuld also scored a pair of runs and now has 200 career runs (#9 all-time at Stanford). In addition, he ranks among the school's all-time leaders in hits (282, #6), doubles (52, #9) and triples (15, #4T). Fuld's updated 2003 season totals of 77 runs scored (#4T) and nine triples (#2T) rank among the school's single-season records.
  • Fuld's three-hit game was the 22nd of his career and his 87th career multiple-hit contest.
  • Danny Putnam (2-4, 2B, RBI), Jed Lowrie (1-4, RBI) and Tobin Swope (1-5) all had their first career CWS hits.
  • Garko and Putnam now co-lead the team with 13 RBI each in six postseason games. Garko and Quentin also both co-lead the team in the postseason with three homers, while Garko's .500 postseason batting average (11-22) tops the club.
