Fort Collins, Colo. - Junior outside hitter Ogonna Nnamani had a match-high 15 kills while hitting .652 (15-0-23) to lead the fourth-ranked Stanford Cardinal women's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of the Bradley Braves at the University Park Holiday Inn Classic in Fort Collins, Colorado. Game scores were 30-13, 30-15, 30-21.
The Cardinal improve to 2-0 on the year while Bradley falls to 0-2. All fifteen Stanford players saw time on the court in the win.
With the Cardinal leading 3-2 in game one, Stanford went on a 10-point run to take a commanding 13-2 lead. A kill by middle blocker Sara McGee put the Cardinal up 19-8 and a kill by outside hitter Ogonna Nnamani gave Stanford the 25-12 advantage. Another kill by Nnamani put the Cardinal at game point leading 29-12. Freshman Michelle Mellard would record her first collegiate kill to give Stanford the 30-13 victory. Stanford hit .429 for the game while Nnamani recorded seven kills.
The Cardinal took a 7-4 lead in game two on a block by Jennifer Harvey and Katie Goldhahn then extended the lead to 10-5 on a kill by Sara Dukes. A kill by Kristin Richards put Stanford up 17-10 while another Richards kill forced a Bradley timeout at 20-10. Freshman Njideka Nnamani recorded her first collegiate kill to give the Cardinal a 26-13 advantage. Stanford won game two 30-15 on a Bradley hitting error to go up two games to none.
A service ace by Jamie Brownell gave the Cardinal a 5-0 advantage to open game three. A block by Harvey and Richards forced a Braves timeout at 10-2. A Sara McGee kill extended the Cardinal lead to 18-6. With Stanford leading 19-8, Bradley would score five consecutive points to close the gap to 13-19. The Cardinal responded with two quick points to go up 21-13 o a block by Harvey and Ogonna Nnamani. A block solo by Richards would force the Braves to take a timeout trailing 16-25. Sara McGee would put Stanford at match point leading 29-19. BU would hold off two match points before a kill by freshman Jennifer Wilson closed out the game, 30-21.
Colorado native Jennifer Harvey chipped in a match-high six blocks on the night while Sara McGee added eight kills. Kristin Richards and Jennifer Hucke led the team and the match with eight digs each.
Stanford will wrap up play at the tournament tonight against Florida A&M with a 5 p.m. MT start.
