No. 4 Stanford Opens Season with 1-0 Win over Long Beach State

STANFORD, Calif. - Senior co-captain Allyson Marquand fired an unassisted goal from 25 yards out to propel the nationally-ranked Stanford women's soccer team to a season-opening 1-0 victory over Long Beach State in a non-conference game on Sunday at Maloney Field.

Stanford's defense allowed the 49ers only one shot in the game that resulted in a save by All-American goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart. The game marked Barnhart's 23rd career shutout.

Marquand led the Cardinal in shots, tallying six of the team's 17 total. Her goal came on an unassisted shot, 25 yards out into the opposite corner in the 82nd minute of play.

The Cardinal, ranked fourth in the nation, hosts Portland, the 2002 NCAA Champions, on Friday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. on Maloney Field.
