Box Score

Williamsburg, Va. - Stanford (2-4) dropped its third straight game with a 5-2 loss to Richmond (3-1) in a neutral site non-conference field hockey match at Busch Field on Wednesday. The Cardinal jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on the first goals of the season for Aska Sturdevan and Keely Machmer-Wessels before Richmond answered with five consecutive scores. Cara-Lynn Lopresti and Lyndsay Erickson were each credited with assists on both goals coming on penalty corners. Lopresti, who was named the NorPac's Co-Rookie of the Week on Wednesday, leads the Cardinal with eight points this season.

Sturdevan scored her first career goal at 12:48 before Machmer-Wessels tallied at 16:41."It was nice to get those first two goals early in the game," said Stanford head coach Lesley Irvine. "But, obviously we were disappointed that Richmond was able to come back on us so quickly."

The Spiders would pick up three straight unassisted goals in a span of just 5:16 after the goal by Machmer-Wessels to take a 3-2 lead. Whitney Wells tallied first at 18:28 by dramatically swatting a ball out of the air and into the cage and finished off the scoring spree at 21:57 when she put away the rebounded shot of teammate Colleen Wevodau. Inge van Bogerijen sandwiched the two goals by Wells with a score of her own at 19:34.

Wevodau (42:51) and Allie Howard (52:47) added unassisted insurance goals for the Spiders in the second half.

Richmond outshot the Cardinal, 18-7, while Stanford held a slim 7-6 advantage in penalty corners.

Richmond goalkeeper Michelle Swartz (3-1) picked up a pair of saves in a winning effort, while Stanford goalkeeper Emily Zander (2-3) recorded five saves but was credited with the loss. Ana Kralovec played the final 7:43 in the net for the Cardinal.

Stanford concludes its five-game road trip in Virginia with a neutral site game versus No. 10 Connecticut on Saturday, September 13 (11 am, ET). The contest will be played at Old Dominion's Foreman Field in Norfolk, Virginia.
