Norfolk, Va. - Stanford (2-5) completed a five-game swing through Virginia with a 4-0 loss to No. 10 Connecticut (4-1) in a neutral site field hockey match at Foreman Field. Stanford lost its fourth in a row and was shutout for the first time this season. Connecticut's Mary Jo Malone and Lauren Henderson each scored a pair of goals. Stanford will return home to open NorPac play versus Bay Area rival and No. 14 California on Saturday, September 20 (1 pm, PT).
Malone, who has now scored six goals this season, tallied unassisted just 3:00 minutes into the contest to give the Huskies an early 1-0 lead and made the score 2-0 on another unassisted goal at 19:24. Henderson picked up a pair of second half goals to make the final score 4-0.
Leigh Morrissette and Abby Ostruzka were credited with assists when Henderson scored her first goal on a penalty corner and Kelly Stolle assisted on Henderson's second goal.
Connecticut goalkeeper Maureen Butler improved to 4-1 on the season and picked up one save. Stanford goalkeepers Ana Kralovec and Emily Zander each had one save while splitting the game in the net.
"We played against some very good competition on this road trip," said head coach Lesley Irvine. "We know what we need to work on to compete at the national level and our players are committing to doing this. This trip was a great experience in terms of getting us prepared for NorPac play."
