Stanford-Notre Dame Match Ends in Tie at Santa Clara/adidas Classic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - No. 24 Stanford took No. 2 Notre Dame into two overtime periods with the game ending in a 0-0 tie on Friday at the Santa Clara/adidas Classic to give the Cardinal a 3-2-1 record this season.

The first period ended without a score as the Fighting Irish fired off eight shots to the Cardinal's five. Sophomore midfielder Jennifer Farenbaugh tallied three of Stanford's shots in the first half. Freshman Shari Summers was forced to the sideline due to injury.

The second period proved slow for the Cardinal as Notre Dame recorded four shots before Stanford co-captain Allyson Marquand was able to make an attempt in the 86th minute of play. Notre Dame's Amanda Guertin notched a quality scoring shot in the 66th minute of play. The attempt from 14 yards out went high to the upper-right cross bar and was stopped by a jumping save from All-American goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart.

There were no saves recorded in either periods of overtime. Barnhart ended the game with five saves to improve her season total to 18. The Fighting Irish, entering the match ranked third in the nation in scoring with 4.5 goals per game, were held to 13 shots total and five shots on goal. Stanford tallied seven shots and two shots on goal. Farenbaugh led the squad with three shots.

Stanford faces Georgia on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 11 a.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium in their final game of the Santa Clara/adidas Classic.
