Stanford Falls to Georgia 1-0 at Santa Clara/adidas Classic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - No. 24 Stanford wrapped up competition at the Santa Clara/adidas Classic with a 1-0 loss to Georgia on Sunday at Buck Shaw Stadium. The loss drops the Cardinal record to 3-3-1 this season.

The first period ended scoreless with Stanford junior forward Natalie Sanderson tallying the lone shot on goal in first half play. The Cardinal recorded six shot attempts in the period while holding the Bulldogs to three attempts.

The second period opened strong for Stanford sophomore Jennifer Farenbaugh with shots in the 49th and 50th minutes of play that resulted in Georgia goalkeeper Ashley Lindley's first two saves of the game. In the 64th minute, the Cardinal were able to fire off three consecutive shots. At 64:40, junior Amy Grady made an attempt into the crossbar. Senior co-captain Allyson Marquand recovered with a header that was saved by Lindley at 64:45 and Marquand rebounded with the third shot of the play at 64:52 that Lindley again stopped.

Georgia's Jessica Winton recorded the only score of the game on a header into the left of the net from Bulldog Ashley King in the 71st minute. Stanford attempted two more shots in the last 18 minutes of play. Marquand recorded five shots with three on goal in the game, followed closely by Farenbaugh with four attempts.

Stanford goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart added four saves to bring her season total to 22. Bulldog Lindley tallied seven saves.

Stanford returns home on Wednesday, Sept. 24, to face the University of San Francisco at 7 p.m. on Maloney Field.
