Stanford, Calif. - Stanford (2-6, 0-1 NorPac) suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 overtime loss to No. 16 California (3-0, 2-0 NorPac) in its NorPac opener Saturday at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf. The Cardinal lost its fifth in a row overall and for the sixth straight time versus California dating back to 2001. California's Valentina Godfrid scored the game-winning goal on an assist by Jessica Bird at 75:21. Godfrid picked up a pair of goals in the contest, while Stanford's Lyndsay Erickson posted the first two-goal game of her career.
California jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Julie Gipner at 11:34 and Godfrid's first score at 23:11 on an assist by Maggie Grimes.
Stanford's Cara-Lynn Lopresti cut the Golden Bear lead in half with an unassisted goal at 24:12. The score remained 2-1 in favor of California until Erickson tied the game early in the second half with an unassisted goal at 43:01.
California's Nora Feddersen gave the Golden Bears a 3-2 advantage with a goal at 63:32 on assists by Gipner and Jenna Long before Erickson responded at 67:11 on an assist by Eleanor Morgan to send the contest into overtime.
California held a 25-9 advantage in shots and a 13-5 margin for penalty corners in the contest.Stanford goalkeeper Emily Zander (2-5) picked up a game-high 12 saves, while California goalkeeper Kelly Knapp (3-0) had four saves.
Feddersen led both teams with nine shot attempts.
