Stanford, Ca - Tony Azevedo tied his career-high with seven goals and Thomas Hopkins added a career-high five goals to power second-ranked Stanford to a 16-8 victory over 17th-ranked BYU-Hawaii in the men's water polo home season opener on Wednesday night at the Avery Aquatic Center.
Azevedo, a member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic team, scored Stanford's first two goals as the Cardinal jumped to a 7-3 first period lead. Hopkins, a sophomore, added three goals in the opening frame. Azevedo added two more goals in the second period and three more in the third period to give him 16 goals for the season. Hopkins added a goal in the second and four periods to give him the team-lead in goals along with Azevedo with 16.
The Cardinal upped its season record to 5-1 while BYU-Hawaii fell to 2-1. Mike Rieben led the Seasiders with three goals.
Cardinal Catalogue: Tony Azevedo had originally scored a career-high seven goals against Loyola Marymount last year ... Thomas Hopkins, with five goals against BYU-Hawaii, broke his previous best which was four goals last year against UC Davis ... Stanford hosts the NorCal Tournament on Oct. 4-5.
