Box Score

Williamsburg, Va. - Stanford (2-3) dropped a tough 2-1 decision to No. 18 William and Mary (3-1) in a non-conference field hockey match at Busch Field on Tuesday. Eleanor Morgan's first goal of the season early in the second half at 44:45 during a flurry in front of the net following a penalty corner cut the Tribe's 2-0 lead at the break in half but the Cardinal was held scoreless over the final 25:15. The loss was the second in a row for Stanford.

William and Mary's Kelly McQuade and Jordan Steele both scored and assisted on the other's goal. McQuade started the scoring with an assist from Steele just 3:32 into the contest to give the Tribe a 1-0 advantage and then assisted on Steele's goal at 12:22 to give William and Mary an early 2-0 lead. William and Mary outshot Stanford in the first half, 9-2, but neither team would score again before the break.

In the second half, Stanford outshot William and Mary, 4-3, and earned three penalty corners to just one for the Tribe.

"We absorbed a lot of pressure in the first half," said Stanford head coach Lesley Irvine. "In the second half, I thought we dominated the game offensively. We are disappointed because we felt we could have won this game, but it says a lot about our team the way we have played against some very tough competition on this trip. It's just a matter of us realizing that we can compete with these types of teams, and we are beginning to do that. This trip will help us to prepare for the NorPac conference schedule. We're learning a lot about ourselves, while making great steps and maturing rapidly."

William and Mary finished the game with a 12-6 advantage in shots and a 6-4 margin in penalty corners.

William and Mary goalkeeper Stacey Gaenzle (2-1) picked up a pair of saves and recorded the victory, while losing goalkeeper Emily Zander (2-2) notched five saves.

Stanford continues its road trip with a neutral site game versus Richmond on Wednesday, September 10 (7 pm, ET). The contest will be played at William & Mary's Busch Field in Williamsburg, Virginia.
