Berkeley, Calif. - Cal built a 5-1 lead to open game one but the Cardinal scored four consecutive points to tie the game at 5-5 on a Golden Bear hitting error. With Stanford trailing 7-11, two quick points pulled the Cardinal to within two but California continued to press taking a 15-10 lead into the media timeout. Stanford could get no closer falling behind 13-19 after a ball-handling error as the Cardinal took a timeout. A block by Ogonna Nnamani and Jennifer Harvey got Stanford to within four points at 18-22 but the Golden Bears scored two quick points to force the final SU timeout. California went on to win game one 30-22. Stanford hit .111 for game one as the Golden Bears recorded a .467 hitting percentage.
Junior outside hitter Ogonna Nnamani tallied 25 kills and 11 digs as the fourth-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team was upset by ninth-ranked California, 3-2, this afternoon at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif. Games scores were 22-30, 31-29, 30-28, 28-30, 9-15.
The Cardinal fall to 13-3 overall, 6-1 in the Pac-10 while the Golden Bears improve to 16-0 overall, 7-0 in league play.
California staked a 6-3 lead to open game two and carried that into the media timeout, leading 15-12 after a Cardinal blocking error. Stanford would tie the game up at 19-all after a Golden Bear hitting error but Cal took a 23-20 lead to force a SU timeout. Trailing 22-25, Stanford would score three consecutive points to again tie the game at 25-all on a kill by Kristin Richards. The Cardinal reached game point at 29-27 after two straight blocks. California held off game point on a Gabrielle Abernathy kill as Stanford took a timeout and tied it up on an SU hitting error. The Cardinal reached their third game point on a kill by Ogonna Nnamani and tied up the match one game each on a Cal hitting error at 31-29.
The Golden Bears opened game three on a 7-2 run before Stanford pulled to within two at 5-7 on a kill by Kristin Richards. The Cardinal took a 9-8 lead after a Cal hitting error but the Golden Bears stormed back to take a 12-9 lead of their own. California took a 15-11 advantage into the media timeout. Stanford strung together five consecutive points to tie the game at 16-all on a kill by Jennifer Harvey. The two teams traded points until the Cardinal took a two-point lead at 21-19 and forced a Golden Bear timeout. Stanford would take their own timeout leading 25-24 after a back row attack pulled Cal to within one. But the Golden Bears took their final timeout trailing 25-28 after a Cardinal block. Stanford reached game point at 29-26 on an Ogonna Nnamani kill. Cal held off two game points before falling 30-28 on a Sara McGee kill.
Game four opened with Stanford staking a 6-2 advantage after a Kristin Richards kill. But the Golden Bears would close the gap to within two points, trailing 10-12 after a Cardinal hitting error. Cal tied the game up at 18-all, but Stanford regained a 22-19 lead on an Anna Robinson dump. But the Golden Bears tied the game again at 23-all and took a 24-23 lead to force a final Cardinal timeout. California forged ahead and reached game point leading 29-26. Stanford held off two game points before falling 28-30 as Cal forced a game five.
Game five remained tight with Stanford holding the 8-7 edge at the media timeout after a Sara McGee kill. The Golden Bears came out of the break to score the next three points and force a Cardinal timeout. It didn't get any better for Stanford as Cal continued to roll going up 13-8 to force the final SU timeout. California won game five and the match 15-9.
Kristin Richards had 17 kills on the afternoon while Jennifer Harvey added 13 kills and three blocks. Sara McGee recorded 11 kills and a team-high four blocks.
Stanford is next in action on Thursday, October 16 at Maples Pavilion against No. 8 UCLA at 7 p.m.
