Stanford, Calif. - Junior outside hitter Ogonna Nnamani recorded 23 kills and 16 digs as the No. 4 Stanford women's volleyball team rallied from two games down to defeat No. 11 UCLA, 3-2 tonight in Maples Pavilion. Game scores were 28-30, 24-30, 30-28, 30-24, 15-11.
The Cardinal improve to 14-3 on the year, 7-1 in Pac-10 play while the Bruins fall to 13-4, 5-3 in league action.
After dropping the first two games to the Bruins, Stanford took an early 4-1 lead in game three and had a 15-11 lead at the media timeout after a UCLA hitting error. The Bruins stormed back to tie the game at 20-all and force a Cardinal timeout. Stanford took their final timeout, trailing 25-27. They came out of the break and scored four consecutive points to reach game point after on a UCLA hitting error. A block by Katie Goldhahn and Jennifer Harvey gave Stanford the 30-28 win.
The Cardinal led 15-11 at the media timeout in game four after a block solo by Harvey. UCLA would close the gap to two points, trailing 18-20 but Stanford would press on taking a 24-19 lead on a block by Harvey and Jennifer Hucke. A kill by Ogonna Nnamani put the Cardinal up 28-22 to force the final Bruin timeout. Stanford reached game point on a Kristin Richard's kill while Nnamani forced a game five with a kill to give the Cardinal the 30-24 win.
Stanford posted a 7-4 lead early in game five to force a Bruin timeout after a UCLA hitting error. Ogonna Nnamani recorded fourth kill of the game to put the Cardinal up 12-9 while Jennifer Hucke got Stanford to game and match point with a kill at 14-10. Kristin Richards recorded the final kill of the match to give the Cardinal the 15-11 victory.
Richards tallied 17 kills, 18 digs and three blocks in Stanford's victory while Jennifer Harvey added 13 kills, seven blocks and three service aces. Jennifer Hucke recorded 11 kills and 16 digs and Katie Goldhahn had 42 assists and 15 digs on the night. Libero Leahi Hall tied her career-high in digs with 17.
Stanford is back in action tomorrow night, hosting No. 1 USC at 7 p.m. Maples Pavilion.
