The 2004 Stanford Baseball team cruised by the Cardinal Alumni, 17-4, in the 2003 Alumni Game at Sunken Diamond on Sunday. The 2004 Cardinal scored in eight of nine innings and collected 20 hits as all nine starters and five reserves had at least one hit. Six different Stanford players - Jonny Ash (2-3, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI), Adam Sorgi (2-2, 3B, RBI), Josh Corn (2-3, 3B, RBI), Joe Ayers (2-3, 2B), Danny Putnam (2-4, 2 2B, RBI) and Sam Fuld (2-4, 2 RBI) - had a pair of hits each for the 2004 squad.
Former Stanford pitcher Jack McDowell ('87), the American League Cy Young Award winner with the Chicago White Sox in 1993, provided an offensive highlight for the Alumni when he blasted a two-run homer off the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. Tony Detter ('92) provided the other two Alumni runs with a two-out, two-RBI triple in the eighth.
Stanford starter Pete Duda was awarded with the victory, allowing two runs and three hits over the first 3.0 innings. Former Major League Baseball player and current MLB ESPN broadcaster Kyle Peterson gave up a pair of first inning runs to suffer the loss.
The annual Old-Timers Game was played prior to the Alumni Game with a team consisting primarily of members from Stanford's first College World Series team in 1953 falling 12-2 to a mixed group of Stanford Alumni in a three-inning contest. Pepe Hinojosa ('78) had a bases loaded three-RBI triple for the winners, while Tom Guardino ('78) and Chuck Williams ('69) both legged out first inning inside-the-park homers with Aaron Mata ('94) also scoring on Guardino's round-tripper. Joel Erickson ('77) was 2-for-2 and the only player for either team with more than one hit. Guardino, Ken Grolle ('76) and Ken Egusa ('78) each added a pair of RBI for the winners with Grolle stroking a third inning double. Charlie Cole ('50) and Al Talboy ('54) each had an RBI for the '53 squad, while Roger Irvine ('53) and Bill Worden ('81) doubled.
Gary Smith ('64) earned the victory by pitching a hitless bottom of the first, while Phil Page took the loss after giving up three runs in the top of the first frame.
"It was a special day to be around all of these players that have meant so much to Stanford Baseball over the years," said Stanford head coach Mark Marquess, who also played for the Cardinal from 1967-69. "We all have such a great time with this wonderful event."
In the Alumni Game, Stanford started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Fuld singled and scored on Ash's double down the left field line for the first run. Putnam followed with an RBI double to score Ash.
Stanford scored four times in the second. Brian Hall reached on an error to start the inning and scored on a double by Chris Lewis before he was tripled home by Corn. Fuld gave the Cardinal another run with an RBI groundout to score Corn. Putnam restarted the rally with a two-out double and scored on an RBI single by Jed Lowrie.
Guardino led off the top of the third with a single for the Cardinal Alumni before McDowell sent a Duda pitch off the scoreboard in leftcenter field to cut the lead for 2004 Stanford Baseball to 6-2.
Hall led off the bottom of the third with a double before scoring on an RBI single by Fuld three batters later. Ash then picked up his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to score Lewis, who had reached on an error.
The 2004 Stanford Baseball team picked up scored three more times with single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh inning. Corn singled to lead off the fifth and scored on a one-out triple by Ash. In the sixth, Ayers singled with one out and scored on a two-out double by Ben Summerhays. Sorgi led off the seventh with a triple and scored on an RBI groundout from John Hester.
McDowell led off the Cardinal Alumni eighth with a walk and moved to second on single by Paul Zuvella ('80) before both scored on Detter's two-RBI triple.
The 2004 squad scored four times in the bottom of the eighth. Zach Gianos was hit by a pitch to start the rally but forced out on Jim Rapoport's fielders choice. Joe Ayers then doubled to put runners on second and third base before Ryan Kissick drove home both Rapoport and Ayers with a two-run double. Sorgi singled home Kissick later in the inning before Rapoport scored another run when he was pinch-running for Summerhays after an error by McDowell at second base.
The 2004 team added two more runs in the bottom of the ninth. Chris Minaker reached on a one-out error and scored when Rapoport tripled on the first pitch throw by David McCarty ('91), a member of the Oakland A's and Boston Red Sox in 2003. Rapoport scored the game's final run on McDowell's second error of the game at second base on a groundball hit by Ayers.
The Mixed Group of Cardinal Alumni started the Old-Timers Game by scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Mata walked to lead off the frame and scored on a two-run inside-the-park homer on a hard ground ball between third and shortstop that rolled nearly all the way to the wall. Williams followed two batters later with an inside-the-park homer in the rightcenter field gap.
The Mixed Group added four runs in the top of the second. Egusa had a two-run single to score the first two runs before Grolle capped the rally with his two-out, two-RBI double.
The Mixed Group scored five more times after two were out in the third. Smith brought home the first run with an RBI single and another scored when Randy Wong ('78) reached on an error before Hinojosa's triple cleared the bases.
The 1953 squad finally got on the board in the bottom of the third when Worden led off with a double and scored on a double by Irvine. Cole doubled home Irvine before the game was called.Stanford will open its 2004 regular season campaign by hosting a three-game series versus 2003 CWS participant Cal State Fullerton (Friday-Sunday, January 30-February 1, 6 pm, 1 pm, 1 pm).
