Cardinal Shutout Trojans 2-0

STANFORD, Calif. - Redshirt freshman Heidi Herrick notched her first goal of the season to help propel the Stanford women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over USC (6-5-4/2-1-1 Pac-10) at Maloney Field on Sunday in front of a crowd of 1,116. The win improves the Cardinal record to 7-6-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the Pac-10 this season.

Stanford took the lead 1-0 in the first period after the Herrick score at 43:10. From five yards out, Herrick fired the shot past USC goalkeeper Julie Peterson into the left corner of the goal off a crossing pass from sophomore Leah Tapscott. The Trojans tallied two shots on goal in the first half, but both were stopped by Cardinal All-American goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart.

Senior Brittany Oliveira opened the second period with an attempt at 45:43 that was saved by USC's Peterson. A foul nearly 12 minutes later would result in Stanford's second and final score of the match. Junior Natalie Sanderson made good on a penalty kick at 57:25 to help seal the 2-0 Cardinal victory.

Barnhart ended the match with four saves and her sixth shutout this season, bringing her career shutouts total to 28. Peterson of USC recorded five saves.

The Cardinal return to conference play on the road as they face Oregon on Oct. 24, at 7 p.m. and Oregon State at 1 p.m. on Oct. 26.
