Seattle, Wash. - Junior outside hitter Ogonna Nnamani notched a match-high 28 kills as the sixth-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team was upset by 10th-ranked Washington, 3-1. Game scores were 25-30, 27-30, 30-20, 28-30.
The Cardinal fall to 14-5 overall and 7-3 in the Pac-10 while Washington improves to 15-4, 6-4 in league play.
With the game tied at six-all in game one, the Huskies went on a three-point run to take a 9-6 advantage. With Washington leading 12-9, Stanford strung together their own run to tie the game at 12-all after a kill by Jennifer Hucke. The Huskies would take a 15-13 lead into the media timeout. Washington would extend their lead to 19-14 forcing the first Cardinal timeout. Stanford took their second and final timeout trailing 17-22. UW led 25-19 before the Cardinal scored three consecutive points to close the gap to 25-22 on a block by Hucke and Sara Dukes. But Stanford could get no closer as the Huskies reached game point leading 29-23. The Cardinal held off two game points before falling 25-30. Stanford hit .091 in game one which also marked the fourth straight match that the Cardinal has lost game one.
Washington opened game two with a 5-2 run and extended the lead to 9-4 causing the Cardinal to take their first timeout. With the Huskies leading 16-8, Stanford went on a three-point run to close the gap to 16-11 after back-to-back kills by Ogonna Nnamani. Stanford called their second timeout, still trailing by five, at 18-23 after a Washington kill. The Cardinal slowly began to chip away at the Huskies lead, cutting the deficit to only two, at 28-26, after a block by Jennifer Harvey and Katie Goldhahn. But Washington would reach game point at 29-26 and take game two, 30-27 to lead the match two games to none. This would mark the third consecutive match that the Cardinal has dropped the first two games.
With Stanford trailing 5-6 in game three, the Cardinal pushed ahead to grab an 8-6 advantage on a kill by Jennifer Harvey. Two consecutive blocks would put Stanford up 13-9. Stanford built on their lead taking a 20-14 lead into the second Washington timeout after a Husky hitting error. The Cardinal continued to roll reaching game point on a kill by Kristin Richards at 29-20. A kill by Harvey ended the game at 30-20. Stanford hit .405 in game three while Ogonna Nnamani notched eight kills.
With game four knotted up at eight-all, Washington strung together three points to force a Cardinal timeout at 11-8. Stanford methodically closed the gap to one, trailing 15-14, after back-to-back kills by Kristin Richards. The Cardinal would tie the game up at 22-all after kills by Jennifer Hucke and Sara Dukes. The teams traded points until Stanford called their final timeout trailing 26-25. Washington reached game and match point leading 29-27. The Cardinal fell 30-28 on the Huskies second match point.
Kristin Richards added 14 kills and 12 digs to the Stanford cause while Jennifer Harvey contributed 12 kills on the night. Jennifer Hucke led the team and match with 17 digs. Sara Dukes has a team-high five blocks on the night.
Stanford will travel to Pullman tomorrow to take on Washington State at 7 p.m.
