No. 3 Stanford downs No. 6 UCSD

Stanford, Ca - Tony Azevedo scored five goals and Peter Varellas added three to power the third-ranked Stanford men's water polo team to a 13-7 victory over sixth-ranked UC San Diego in anon-league game on Friday afternoon at the Avery Aquatic Center.

Stanford scored three goals in the first two minutes of the game on goals by Varellas, Greg Crum and Azevedo. Two goals by UCSD's Chris Finegold at 4:20 and 2:50 of the first period cut the Stanford lead to 3-2.

A Mark Moser goal at 2:10 of the first period made it 4-2 in favor of Stanford, but the Tritons fought back to cut the Cardinal margin to one goal, 4-3, at 59 seconds on a goal by Matthew Ustaszewski.

Stanford again went to work, scoring five straight goals to take a 8-3 lead with 29 seconds left in the first half. Two of those five goals were scored by Azevedo, who now has a team-leading 50 goals for the season.

The Cardinal maintained a five goal lead at the end of the third period, 10-5.

Stanford hosts fifth-ranked UCLA on Nov. 1. The game time has been changed from 11 a.m. to 10 a.m.
