Stanford, Calif. - Middle blocker Jennifer Harvey tallied 16 kills and seven blocks as the ninth-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team defeated Arizona State 3-2 tonight in Maples Pavilion. Game scores were 30-27, 30-23, 35-37, 29-31, 15-9.
The Cardinal improve to 17-5 overall, 10-3 in the Pac-10 while the Sun Devils fall to 8-12 overall, 3-8 in league play.
Stanford jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the match with wins in the first and second games. But the Sun Devils rallied to win the next two to force a fifth and deciding game.
In game five, the Cardinal opened with a 4-1 lead to force an early Sun Devil timeout after a kill by Jennifer Hucke. Stanford led 8-6 as the two squads switched sides of the court. Stanford pushed the lead to 11-8 on a kill by Kristin Richards but called a timeout at 11-9. The Cardinal came out of the timeout to score the final four points, including a service ace by Jennifer Harvey to reach match point at 14-9. An Arizona State hitting error gave Stanford the 15-9 win.
Ogonna Nnamani led the team with 19 kills while Kristin Richards added 18 kills and 15 digs. Jennifer Hucke chipped in 12 digs and four blocks while Leahi Hall and Courtney Schultz added 11 and 13 digs respectively. Setter Katie Goldhahn led the squad with 50 assists and notched 10 digs on the night.
ASU's Natalie Harris led the match with 23 kills while Courtney Blocher and Juliana Escobar added a match-high 17 digs each.
