STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 23 Stanford women's soccer team put up a hard fight against Loyola Marymount on Sunday, but in the end the Cardinal fell 1-2 to the Lions at Maloney Field. LMU was crowned the champion of the 2003 Stanford/Nike Invitational. Stanford enters conference play next weekend with a 5-5-1 record this season.
In the first period, Stanford dominated the statistics with eight shots and three corner kicks, though it was LMU who was able to record a score in the 38th minute of play. The goal came from Lion Whitney Temple on an assist from teammate Stephanie Tobin. Loyola Marymount goalkeeper Kelly Yukihiro tallied five of her eight game saves in the first period.
Stanford posted one major scoring opportunity in the first period. The series began with a corner kick from Cardinal Amy Grady at 15:27. Senior Brittany Oliveira's attempt at 15:44 hit the upper crossbar, but was recovered by senior Allyson Marquand for the second Stanford shot that was blocked by Yukihiro. Junior Natalie Sanderson recovered the missed attempt yet again for a shot that appeared to score, but was waved off by the official as having been in possession of the LMU goalie.
The Lions increased their lead to 2-0 on a goal from Kelly Lewandowski (assisted by Shari Nishikawa and Laura Trask) in the 58th minute. Marquand would end up notching the lone Stanford goal in the final three minutes of the match. She made good on a penalty kick at 87:30 that was the result of an LMU foul within the box on Cardinal freshman Gina Farias-Eisner.
Stanford opens Pac-10 Conference play on Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. at Arizona. The squad continues on the road on Oct. 12, at Arizona State at 1 p.m.
