Nov. 2, 2003

Newport Beach, CA - The Stanford lightweight women wrapped up their fall racing season with a win at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival. The Cardinal finished with a decisive margin of 55 seconds over second place San Diego Rowing Club. California rounded out the top three finishers in the lightweight event.

Racing in their first ever rowing event, the Cardinal novice had a strong showing amongst a field of twenty eight. Stanford "A" finished 6th while Stanford "B" finished 13th. UCLA finished first in the event.

The Stanford Men's Varsity "A" Boat was stopped short in the quest to defend the Open Men's 8+ title while leading Sunday's race. The impact and subsequent damage with one mile to go, hindered the Cardinal as the shell limped to the finish line.

The Cardinal "B" boat not to be outdone, made a radical left turn and introduced itself to the same buoy. This occurred after it appeared the shell was lined up for a strong finish.
