STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford junior Kelley Suminski led the women's basketball team to victory as the Cardinal wrapped up exhibition play with a 92-86 win over Everyone's Internet. Suminski tallied 17 points in the first half, shooting 6-of-8 from the field, 3-of-4 from three-point range. She notched 24 points by the end of the game, just one point shy of her career single-game high of 25 points.
Freshman Kristen Newlin recorded her first collegiate double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds in 29 minutes of play. Also scoring in double figures were Sebnem Kimyacioglu with 14 points and Susan King Borchardt with 16 points.
The Cardinal held onto a strong lead after moving ahead of Everyone's Internet 10-7 at 15:24 with a three-pointer from Kimyacioglu. A two-point jumper from senior Nicole Powell began a 26-7 Stanford scoring run in the last nine minutes of the half. The Cardinal closed the half on a Markisha Coleman free throw with a 51-26 lead.
Everyone's Internet closed the 25-point gap in the second half by scoring 60 points. Stacey Smalls of EV-1 recorded 13 of her 16 points in the second half.
A layup at 15:37 gave the Cardinal a 30-point lead, but EV-1 answered with a 13-3 scoring drive that brought the team within 20 points. With 12 points each from Alicia Thompson, Demya Walker and Alayne Ingram, and 16 points from Smalls, Everyone's Internet came within six points to end the game in Stanford's favor 92-86.
The Cardinal shot 56.9 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from the three-point line. Everyone's Internet notched 16 steals and Stanford turned the ball over 21 times.
The Cardinal next travel to Malibu, Calif., to face Pepperdine at 5 p.m. PT on Nov. 21. Stanford returns to Maples Pavilion to take on Fordham on Nov. 23 at 2 p.m.
