STANFORD, Calif. - Senior co-captain Allyson Marquand led the Cardinal to their final victory of the 2003 regular season recording both scores in an exciting 2-1 win in overtime against intrastate rival Cal on Friday at Maloney Field.
A goal from sophomore Leah Tapscott in the first period appeared to be Stanford's first score before being called off due to an offsides call against the Cardinal. Stanford led in shot attempts 7-3 as the last minutes of play counted down in the first period.
The match remained scoreless going into the 42nd minute of play when a free kick and a header off a Golden Bear defender led to Marquand's first goal. Stanford took a 1-0 lead into halftime as Marquand drilled in a goal shot from 35 yards out into the left side of the net.
Stanford held Cal scoreless and to four shots in the second period until Cardinal Tapscott fouled senior Kimberly Yokers on a counter attack inside the box with five seconds remaining in regulation play. Golden Bear Amy Willison scored on the resulting penalty kick to tie the match 1-1 and send the game into overtime.
Cal was able to fire off one shot in overtime that went wide. At 98:52, Cardinal Amy Grady crossed to Marquand for the game-winning shot. Marquand fired an attempt that was deflected off a Cal defender into the net for the Stanford win. The Cardinal end the regular season 10-8-2 overall and 5-3-1 in the Pac-10.
Marquand led Stanford with five shots and ends the regular season with a team high ten goals. All-American goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart tallied three saves in the Cal match.
