No. 1 Stanford Drops No. 3 UCLA, 5-3

Feb. 28, 2003

Stanford, Calif. - Top-ranked Stanford (6-0, 1-0 MPSF) dropped third-ranked UCLA (5-3, 2-2 MPSF) for the second time this season this afternoon at the Avery Aquatic Center. Senior keeper Jackie Frank collected 14 saves as the Cardinal defeated the Bruins 5-3.

Freshman Laurel Champion scored the first goal of the day as the Cardinal took a 1-0 lead, but the Bruins' Natalie Golda tied the match at 1-1 with 1:28 left in the first quarter. The Cardinal responded as junior Lauren Faust and senior Julie Gardner each added a goal in the second period to give the Cardinal a two-point edge. Golda scored her second goal of the day, but Stanford freshman Scotti Shafer posted the Cardinal's fourth goal with 12 seconds left in the first half for the 4-2 lead.

Stanford did not score in the third period, but UCLA did net one goal with 50 seconds left to cut their deficit to one. The Cardinal played tight defense as Frank recorded three saves in the final seven minutes, keeping the Bruins at bay. With six seconds left in the game, Stanford took control of the ball and junior Brenda Villa drew an ejection from Maureen Flanagan. The Bruin was then issued a penalty and Villa scored the final goal on a penalty shot to seal the 5-3 Stanford win.

The Cardinal will be back in action tomorrow when No. 10 UC Santa Barbara visits The Farm at 1 p.m.
