No. 1 Stanford Takes 8-2 Win Over Tenth-Ranked UCSB

Stanford, Calif. - No. 1 Stanford (7-0, 2-0 MPSF) posted its seventh win of the season as the Cardinal earned an 8-2 victory over No. 10 UC Santa Barbara (6-6, 0-3 MPSF) this afternoon at the Avery Aquatic Center. Junior Brenda Villa led the game in scoring with three goals while freshman Erica Wilson tabbed two goals.

The Gauchos took the first lead of the day on a man-up goal with eight seconds remaining in the first period. Stanford rallied on a advantage goal by sophomore Kelty Luber two minutes into the second quarter and then took the lead less than one minute later on a goal by sophomore Hannah Luber. The Cardinal increased its margin in the third period with two goals by Villa and one each by Wilson and senior Nicole Huszcz. The Gauchos added their second goal with just under five minutes left in the third, but could not find the net for the remainder of the match. In the final seven minutes, Villa and Wilson each scored once to secure the 8-2 Cardinal win.

In goal, Jackie Frank started for the Cardinal and collected nine saves before freshman Amanda Matuk relieved her in the fourth quarter and nabbed one save.

The Cardinal will travel to Santa Barbara next weekend for the UCSB Gaucho Invitational on March 8th and 9th.
