First and Second Varsity Eights Qualify for Grand Finals At the San Diego Crew Classic

April 5, 2003

San Diego, Calif. - Coming off of their strong performance last weekend at the Windermere Rowing Classic the Stanford Women's varsity keeps on rolling as they qualify for Sunday's grand final with a first place finish in their heat of the Jessop-Whittier Cup event. Despite windy conditions and a less than perfect first 500 meters, the boat pushed through the second 500 meters to grab the lead from USC. The Cardinal varsity will race in Sunday's grand final with California, defending national champion Washington, Washington State, Oregon State, USC, and Texas.

The Stanford second varsity eight also rose to the occasion today and qualified for the grand final for the first time in five years. The Cardinal had a strong start as they moved easily into a qualifying position behind Washington. The second varsity will face UW, California, USC, Minnesota, and Washington State in the Grand Final.

The novice women, racing for the first time in this lineup got off to a slow start in their qualifying heat and then moved steadily on the field as the race came down the course. The boat finished fourth, just three tenth of a second off third place St. Joseph's. The novice will face UC Davis, University of San Diego, USC, St. Joseph's and UCSD in Sunday's petite final.
