STANFORD, Calif. (AP) -- Brian Hall and Carlos Quentin hit home runs and Ryan McCally pitched an eight-hitter as top-seeded Stanford defeated No. 4 Illinois-Chicago 9-2 in the first round of an NCAA Regional on Friday night.
McCally (6-2) made his first start since April 23 when he lasted 1 2/3 innings against Arizona. He completed his first game since Feb. 16 against Fresno State.
McCally allowed two runs on seven hits. He struck out a season-high 10 and walked three.
Bryan Russo had two hits for the Flames (39-17), who were making their first postseason apperance.
Illinois-Chicago starter Ryan Gehring (8-5) lasted 2 2/3 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits. He walked two and didn't strike out a batter.
Stanford (42-15) scored four runs in the first inning. Ryan Garko, Donny Lucy and Jed Lowrie drove in runs while Sam Fuld scored on a balk.
Mike Hughes doubled home two runs in the second for the Flames, but couldn't mount another threat against McCally, who made eight relief appearances between starts.
Hall hit his fifth home run of the season with one out in the second. Quentin's homer, his ninth, led off the sixth.
Danny Putnam and Jonny Ash also drove in runs for Stanford, which is making its 24th NCAA appearance and is hosting its eight straight regional.
The Cardinal are seeking their fifth consecutive trip to the College World Series.
Fuld extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a fifth-inning single.
