NCAA COLLEGE WORLD SERIES (at Omaha, NE)
POST-GAME QUOTES
Stanford 8, at South Carolina 0
June 13, 2003
STANFORD
Head Coach Mark Marquess
(opening statement): "It was a great game for us. It was a great pitching performance for John Hudgins. He's done a lot this year. He gave up two hits and did a fantastic job. I thought it was important for us to score two runs in the first inning. Even though we've been here before, I thought it relaxed us. Getting those runs in the first inning really helped us."
(on pulling John Hudgins after eight innings): "His pitch count was low. We thought he might be able to come back and pitch again with a low pitch count. If we can't keep an 8-0 lead with the bullpen, we should go home."
Starting pitcher John Hudgins
(on his performance): "They were a real aggressive hitting team. They were a good hitting ball club."
(on Carlos Quentin's tremendous catch in the second inning): I didn't think he had a shot at it at all. We played great defense today."
(on being pulled after eight innings of pitching): "It's not a one-game tournament. This isn't about individual performances. It's about winning ballgames."
Catcher Ryan Garko
(on his hitting success at the College World Series): "I like coming to the College World Series. There's a heightened awareness here and I seem to feed off that. I have to give a lot of credit to Sam (Fuld) for getting on base. He's done that a lot this year. It helps that we've been here before. The only time we get in trouble is when we try to do too much."
(on John Hudgins performance): "What he did so well was everything looked the same out of his hand. He was throwing strikes and mixing his pitches, which is what he did well all year."
Centerfielder Sam Fuld
(on playing behind John Hudgins today): "It was fun. He worked quick and was throwing strike one on every at bat. We shouldn't be worried about being focused at this time of the year, but playing behind a quick pitcher does help keep you sharp."
SOUTH CAROLINA
Head Coach Ray Tanner
(Opening statement): "That game wasn't too hard to figure out. (Stanford pitcher) John Hudgins pitched a good game. You have to give credit where credit is due. Stanford was a better club than us today."
(On frustrating day): "They (Stanford) are good every year. They don't make many mistakes. We didn't play very well today. Even if we had played a perfect game, it still would have been a good game. You hate to lose anytime, and we didn't play very well today."
(On losing first game of CWS in 2002): "There's never an advantage to this situation. We do have some experience with this. We're going to regroup, battle back and come back on Sunday."
Third baseman Brian Buscher
(On losing first game of CWS in 2002): "We're just going to take this one game at a time. We fell behind 11-0 last year, battled back and took it one game at a time."
(On Stanford starting pitcher John Hudgins): "He threw three different pitches for strikes all day. He kept me off balance all three times."
Starting pitcher David Marchbanks
(On his performance): "I didn't establish the strike zone early today. We'll be back on Sunday."
South Carolina second baseman Kevin Melillo
(On Stanford starting pitcher John Hudgins): "He's an excellent pitcher. He threw a lot of strikes today and made a lot of good pitches when he had to."
