PROVO, Utah (AP) - Stanford quarterback Trent Edwards scored on a 14-yardrun with 3:51 remaining and the Cardinal defense held off Brigham Young for an18-14 victory Saturday night.
John Beck drove BYU to the Stanford nine-yard line in the final minute but Jared Newberry preserved the Cardinal victory when he sacked Beck on fourth down.
Kenneth Tolon carried the ball a career-high 32 times for a career-high 141 yards as Stanford (2-0) won thefirst-ever meeting between the schools.
Edwards was just 10-for-23 for 25 yards passing with two interceptions. LukePowell also had a 31-yard pass for Stanford, which had its worst passing gameever with 56 yards. The previous low was 62 passing yards against California in1984.

Beck was often hurried by the Stanford blitz and was sacked five times. Healso threw two second-half interceptions to Oshiomogho Atogwe, who returned thesecond one to the BYU 25 to set up Edwards' touchdown run.
The Cougars took a 14-9 lead on a trick play when former quarterback LancePendelton caught a lateral, then lofted the ball to Daniel Coats for a 31-yardscoring play.
Powell returned a punt 68 yards to set up Michael Sgroi's 24-yard field goalto trim the BYU lead to 14-12 with 8:50 remaining, then Atogwe set up thewinning run with his second interception.
Edwards became the first freshman quarterback to win his starting debutsince Steve Stenstrom in 1991. He came off the bench in Stanford's opener andled the team to 31 straight points as the Cardinal beat San Jose State 31-10.
