Old Dominion Picks Up 5-2 Win Over Stanford

Norfolk, Va. - Old Dominion (2-2) picked up a 5-2 win over Stanford (2-2) and snapped a two-game win streak for the Cardinal in a non-conference match Sunday at Foreman Field on Sunday, the second contest of a season-long five-game road trip for Stanford. The Monarchs scored four times before halftime to jump out to a 4-0 lead on goals by Chilly Banuelos, Melissa Leonetti, Angie Loy and Janelle Engle. Caroline Nichols added a goal in the second half for Old Dominion, while Lyndsay Erickson and Noor Dawood both tallied in the second straight game for the Cardinal. Stanford goalkeeper Emily Zander was forced into a career-best 24 saves.

Banuelos started the scoring with an unassisted goal at 13:57 to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead. Old Dominion scored its next two goals when Leonetti (22:42) and Loy (25:04) finished off penalty corners. Engle and Banuelos picked up assists on Leonetti's score before Leonetti assisted on Loy's score. Engle added the Monarchs' final goal of the half when Dana Sensenig assisted on her tipped in shot.

Erickson put the Cardinal on the scoreboard when she completed a penalty corner at 38:18 with Keely Machmer-Wessels and Aska Sturdevan picking up assists.

Old Dominion responded with Nichols' unassisted goal at 42:42 before Dawood finished off the scoring by finishing off another penalty corner as Machmer-Wessels picked up another assist.

Old Dominion dominated first half of action, outshooting the Cardinal by a count of 27-0. The Cardinal fared much better after the break, outscoring the Monarchs, 2-1, and cutting the shot disadvantage to 11-5. Old Dominion finished with a 38-5 shot advantage and earned 20 penalty corners, compared to four for the Cardinal.

"Old Dominion is consistently one of the nation's best field hockey teams," said Stanford head coach Lesley Irvine. "But, we didn't give up and played well in the second half."

Old Dominion goalkeeper Tina Walker (2-2) recorded three saves and earned the victory, while Zander (2-1) suffered her first loss of the season in the net.
