STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 6 ranked Stanford women's gymnastics team, in search of its second Super Six appearance in three years, started the season in impressive fashion, capturing the Stanford Quadrangular. The Cardinal tallied 196.200 points and collected three wins in defeating second place Central Michigan (194.475), Sacramento State (191.425), and San Jose State (191.075).
"I thought that we looked great tonight," said Stanford Head Coach Kristen Smyth. "It's always nice to start out at home and we had a fantastic crowd tonight,"
The Cardinal were led by senior All-American Lise L?veill?, who captured first place in the All-Around. L?veille, who registered 39.425, turned in a spectacular floor routine in the Cardinal's last event of the night to beat out fellow Stanford All-American's sophomore Natalie Foley (39.375), and senior Lindsay Wing (39.125), who finished second and third respectively. Sophomore Jessica Louie, participating in the all-around for the first time, turned a solid performance, tallying 38.850, good for fifth place.
"Jessica Louie competed in the all-around for the first time tonight, and she did a fantastic job," said Smyth. "I'm really pleased with our senior leadership. Lise L?veill? was just a rock tonight. She's just a great leader and I'm so proud of the way she competed. She came in here tonight and didn't skip a beat from last season, and her floor routine was just beautiful."
Stanford, who started out on vault to begin the night, jumped out to the lead after the first event and never looked back. Behind strong vaults from L?veill? (9.850), senior Shelly Goldberg (9.800) and Foley (9.800), the Cardinal tallied 48.700 for the early lead.
Stanford moved to the uneven bars next, where another senior All-American helped the Cardinal extend its lead. Caroline Fluhrer turned in the best performance of the night on the bars, recording a 9.925. Foley (9.900) and Wing (9.850) also performed well on the bars for the Cardinal.
The Cardinal then moved to the balance beam, an event that Stanford has become known to perform well on. The Cardinal didn't disappoint. Led by Wing (9.850), the defending three-time Pac-10 Champion, all six Stanford performers finished with a score of 9.725 or better en route to collecting 49.050 points and extending the Cardinal's lead after three events.
Stanford finished the evening with the floor exercise. L?veill?, the Cardinal's last performer of the evening, ended the meet in spectacular fashion, recording a 9.925, the best score of the evening on the floor to seal first place in the all-around.
The Cardinal next compete at No. 9 Arizona State on January 18th before returning to The Farm to face No. 17 Arizona on January 23rd.
