No. 7 Stanford Upset By No. 9 ASU

TEMPE, Ari. - The Stanford University women's gymnastics team was upset by the Arizona State Sun Devils Sunday afternoon in Tempe, AZ. Arizona State, who earned a No. 9 preseason ranking, tallied 195.825 points versus Stanford, who scored 195.500 points.

The win marked the first for the Sun Devils over the Cardinal since the 2000 Pac-10 Championship, also in Tempe. It also snapped Stanford's string of nine consecutive wins over Arizona State.

Stanford started the day strong, posting a 48.575 score on vault versus Arizona State, who registered a 48.425 in the event. Senior Lise L?veill? and sophomore Natalie Foley tied for first with a score of 9.825, while sophomore Glyn Sweets finished sixth with a score of 9.750.

Stanford moved to the uneven bars, where senior Caroline Fluhrer led the Cardinal with a score of 9.925, good for the second best score of the day. Foley tied for third on the bars with a score of 9.900, while senior Lindsay Wing and freshman Stacy Sprando each posted a 9.800 score. The Sun Devils, paced by Ashley Kelly's 9.950 edged the Cardinal by .125 points in the event, as ASU recorded a team score of 49.200 to Stanford's 49.075.

The Cardinal held a slim 97.650-97.625 lead after two events with the balance beam, an event that has traditionally been strong for Stanford. But it was the Sun Devils who captured the event and took the overall lead scoring a 49.150 on beam compared to Stanford's 49.075. Stanford's top finisher was Foley, who tied ASU's Kelly for the best score with a 9.900. Wing, the three-time defending Pac-10 champion on beam, tied for third with a score of 9.850, while Sweets registered a 9.800.

Heading into the last event of the day, the Sun Devils held a 146.775-146.725 lead. Despite a 9.925 score in the floor exercise by L?veill?, the top score on floor of the day, the Sun Devils sealed the upset win by scoring a team total of 49.050 to 48.775 for Stanford.

Foley was Stanford's most consistent performer, capturing second in the all-around with a score of 39.475, while Wing (38.775) and L?veill? (38.125) took fifth and sixth place in the all-around, respectively.
