STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford University women's gymnastics team defeated the University of Washington 197.400-195.475. Senior All-American Lindsay Wing turned in an amazing performance on the balance beam, recording a perfect 10.000, while fellow senior All-American Caroline Fluhrer took home top honors in the all-around with a score of 39.550. The Cardinal improve to 5-1 on the season and 2-1 in Pac-10 competition, while the Huskies fall to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in conference meets.
"I think that as a team, we're right where we need to be," said Stanford Head Coach Kristen Smyth. "I think that tonight's performance showed that we are a great team, and for us to be able to come out and put two outstanding performances together in back-to-back weeks proves that."
The Cardinal started the night on the vault and jumped out to an early lead, recording a 49.100. Sophomore All-American Natalie Foley tied Washington's Tacia LaBatte for the high score with a 9.900, while senior All-American's Lise L?veill? and Fluhrer registered a 9.875 and 9.825, respectively.
The Cardinal moved to the uneven bars, where they were able to extend their lead by posting a team score of 49.475. Wing posted the top score of the night on the bars, earning a 9.950, while sophomore All-American Glyn Sweets was right behind her with a 9.925.
In the third rotation, Stanford moved to the balance beam where Wing proved why she is the reigning three-time Pac-10 champion in that event, nailing her second career perfect score on the beam. Wing is the only performer in Stanford history to have scored a perfect 10.000 on the beam and is the only Cardinal to have earned two perfect scores in any event.
"I felt like she had a perfect routine last week," said Smyth. "Lindsay is such a calming source for us. She is just a great competitor and her performance tonight was flawless."
The Cardinal moved to the floor exercise needing a strong team performance to wrap up their second consecutive win. Senior Shelly Goldberg started the Cardinal off with a 9.800, followed by Wing who scored a 9.900. Fluhrer wrapped up the all-around title with a spectacular 9.950 performance, while Foley earned a 9.875 and L?veill? capped the evening with a 9.950 of her own.
The Cardinal will travel to defending national champions UCLA on February 8th in a battle between two national powerhouses. The two teams tied last season with identical scores of 197.450.
