Stanford, Calif. - Second baseman Meghan Sickler went 3-for-4 at the plate as the No. 10 Stanford softball team shut out Santa Clara, 5-0, in their first game at the Stanford Invitational. The Cardinal improve to 4-1 overall while the Broncos fall to 2-10 on the season.
Freshman Jackie Rinehart opened up the first inning with an infield hit. Heather Shook reached based on a fielder's choice while Rinehart was safe at second on a error by the second baseman. Both runners advanced a base on another error by the second baseman. Lindsay Key singled up the middle to score both Rinehart and Shook. Jessica Allister tripled to right centerfield as Key scored then came home herself on a single by Michelle Thiry as the Cardinal opened up a 4-0 lead.
Stanford would score one more run in the fifth inning as Catalina Morris opened the inning with a double. Lauren Lappin walked to set up runners at first and second. Morris advanced to third on a fielder's choice by Allister and scored on a single by Sickler.
Dana Sorensen picked up her second win of the season, going five innings while scattering two hits and striking out six. Santa Clara's Liz Courter took the loss (0-3), pitching six innings, allowing nine hits and three earned runs.
Stanford will next take on Missouri in the 5 p.m. game.
