STANFORD, Calif. - The University of Hawai'i proved why it is the No. 2 men's volleyball team in the country by defeating the No. 9 Stanford University Cardinal in three games. Game scores for the match were 30-19, 30-14, and 30-19. The Cardinal fall to 5-8 on the season and 3-6 in MPSF action, while the Warriors improve to 7-2 on the year and 3-1 in MPSF play.
The Warriors set the tone from the beginning, grabbing the first game by a score of 30-19. Hawai'i hit a blistering .593 for the game. The Warriors were led by junior middle blocker Delano Thomas who hammered home seven kills in the game. For the Cardinal, junior middle blocker Craig Buell and redshirt junior Pat Bomhack each tallied three kills.
Game two wasn't much better for the Cardinal as the Warriors captured the frame, 30-14. Hawai'i continued to hit for a high percentage as the Warriors registered a .500 hitting percentage for the game. For the Cardinal, junior outside hitter David Vogel and Bomhack each tallied three kills.
The Warriors closed out the match by taking game three, 30-19. The Warriors were led by sophomore middle blocker Mauli'a La Barre, who was a perfect 5-for-5 on kill attempts in the game. Vogel paced the Cardinal with three kills.
For the game, Vogel led the Cardinal with eight kills, while Bomhack added seven. Sophomore outside hitter Ben Reddy and Buell each added four kills. Thomas recorded a game-high 14 kills for the Warriors, while La Barre registered a 1.000 hitting percentage on 11 kills in 11 attempts. La Barre also added six blocks in the game, four of them solo and four block assists.
The Cardinal and the Warriors will be back in action Saturday night in Maples Pavilion at 7:00 pm (PT).
