St. Petersburg, Fla. - In their first team race of the season, the Cardinal Coed Sailors traveled to St. Petersburg, Florida to battle with four east coast teams at the University of South Florida's Sailing Center. Team racing is a 3 boats-on-3 boats racing format where contestants use rules, strategy and boathandling to finish races ahead of the opposing team. Scores result in a win-loss record that determines a winner. After going 13-3 on the first day, the Stanford team was tied for first with Eckerd College (St. Pete, Fla.).
"We went into the final four tied for first," explained Coach Brent Harrill. "but a couple of mistakes hurt us." Between a protest hearing and some bad play execution, the Cardinal dropped to 3rd in the final standings. Coach Harrill remains optimistic, "We identified some areas to work on," he explained, "we've got two months before our district championships and three months before the nationals."
Competing for the Cardinal were skippers Pete Deming '05, Andy Mesher '05, Brian Haines '06, Emery Wager '07, and crews Taylor Clark '04, Lucy Horton '05, Becca Levin '07, and Caroline Young '07.
