STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford University men's volleyball team defeated Cal in three games Wednesday night in Burnham Pavilion. Game scores for the match were 30-22, 30-25, and 30-24.
The Cardinal raced out to a hot start, defeating the Bears 30-22 in the first game. Behind the outstanding play of middle blockers junior Craig Buell and sophomore Chris Ahlfeldt, the Cardinal hit .389, while limiting the Bears to a .156 percentage. Buell added seven kills in the game on a .875 hitting percentage, while Ahlfeldt chipped in four on a .800 percentage.
The Cardinal cooled off in the second game, but still managed to hold on for the 30-25 win. This time it was junior outside hitter David Vogel who led the Cardinal, registering five kills on a .500 hitting percentage for the game.
Stanford closed out the match by taking game three 30-24. Ahlfeldt and Vogel led the Cardinal with five and four kills, respectively, while sophomore outside hitter Nick Manov added three kills in the game.
For the match, three Cardinal players registered double-digit kills. Vogel hammered home a team-high 12 kills, while Buell and Ahlfeldt both tallied 11 kills on identical .563 hitting percentages. Buell was a force at the net for the Cardinal, recording seven block assists on the night. Redshirt junior setter Kevin Hansen handed out a game-high 37 assists.
The Cardinal are back in action Friday night when they host La Verne for a 7:00 pm (PT) match in Burnham Pavilion.
