Alicia Craig Wins 3,000 Meter Title At MPSF Championships

Seattle, Wa - The Stanford women's indoor track & field team grabbed the first day lead on Friday with 39 points, including 23 points from the 3,000 meters, during first day competition at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Dempsey Indoor Facility.

UCLA sits in second place behind Stanford with 31.5 points while Washington State is third (18.5) and Cal Poly in fourth (18).

Stanford sophomore Alicia Craig won the 3,000 meter title with a meet record time of 9:26.67. Freshman Amanda Trotter finished second in a time of 9:36.25 while Anita Siraki earned Stanford valuable team points with a fifth place showing (9:47.70). Jeane Goff finished eighth (9:49.85).

A second place, season-best finish by Undine Becker in the long jump (19-10 3/4, 6.06m) gave Stanford another eight points in the team competition.

In the women's prelims, Stanford's sprinters all qualified in their events, including a 1-2-3 finish in the 400 meters by Nashonme Johnson (54.68), Ashley Freeman (55.32) and Keisha Gaines (55.77). Jakki Bailey was a double qualifer in the 60 meters (7.48) and 200 meters (24.80).

Katie Hotchkiss produced the best time in the qualifying heat of the mile (4:53.00). Kathleen Trotter finished third (4:53.11) while Sara Bei was fourth (4:56.05).

In the men's competition, Ian Dobson finished second in the 3,000 meters in an NCAA qualifying time of 7:54.65. Robert Cheseret of Arizona won the competition in a time of 7:52.00. Seth Hejny placed fourth (8:01.05) while David Vidal was fifth (8:02.72) and freshman Neftalem Araia finished eighth (8:09.42).

UCLA used a sweep of the top three places in the shot put as a springboard to 52 points, just ahead of Oregon (45.5) and third place Cal (37). Stanford resides in sixth place with 19 points.

The meet, which serves as the indoor conference championships for the Pac-10 and Big West Conference track & field teams, concludes Saturday with events scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 2:20 p.m.
