Tempe, Ariz. - Matt Gentry (157) and Imad Kharbush (174) took home first place at the Pac-10 Wrestling Championships held over the weekend. Both wrestlers won three matches during the tournament to come home with Pac-10 crowns. Brad Metzler (141) took home second place, and four other Stanford wrestlers placed at the tournament. The team tied for fifth place with host Arizona State, a great improvement on their ninth place finish last year.
On the second day of wrestling at the Pac-10 championships, three Stanford wrestlers reached the finals. At 157 pounds, Matt Gentry took on Brian Cobb of Bakersfield, and defeated him in a 5-2 decision for the Pac-10 title. Gentry is still undefeated this season and is ranked second in the nation. Imad Kharbush took the title at 174 pounds by defeating number one seed Jed Pennell of Oregon State in a close title match. Kharbush won 6-4 in sudden victory, his second overtime win at the tournament. Brad Metzler, who entered the tournament with the top seed, fell to Bakersfield's Jesse Brock in a close 3-2 final.
In addition, four other Stanford wrestlers placed at the tournament: at 125 pounds, Tanner Gardner took fifth place after recording an 11-9 decision over Christian Staylor of ASU; Paul Gross took fourth place at 133 pounds; Luis Vendrell finished in sixth place at 149 pounds after losing an 8-7 decision against Brett Gordon of Fullerton that was decided by a tie-breaker; and at 165 pounds Brian Perry took home fifth place after a 13-4 major decision over Devin Mair of Portland State.
Stanford finished the tournament with 85.0 team points, tying Arizona State. Boise State took first place after three wrestlers took home crowns with a total team score of 94.5. The top three placewinners from each weight, along with eleven wildcard selections, will advance to the NCAA Championships held in St. Louis, Missouri from March 18-20. Representing Stanford at the NCAA Championships will be Tanner Gardner (125, wildcard), Paul Gross (133, wildcard), Brad Metzler (141, second place), Matt Gentry (157, first place), and Imad Kharbush (174, first place).
