Seven Stanford Athletes Qualify For NCAA Regionals At Stanford Invitational

Stanford, Ca - Jason Goff threw the javelin a career-best 210-3 (64.08) and that throw was also third-best in school history to highlight Stanford's participation in the Stanford Invitational on Friday at Cobb Track & Angell Field.

Goff had his previous best only last week with a mark of 209-10 at Berkeley.

Jacob Gomez, Louis Luchini, Jonathan Pierce and Chris Emme all qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the 5,000 meters. Gomez was timed in a career-best 13:56.77. Luchini was timed in 14:03.92, Pierce at 14:13.72 while Emme produced a time of 14:15.13. The NCAA Regional qualifying time was 14:18.58.

Sean Knapp was also an NCAA Regional qualifier in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:06.13.

In women's competition, Ashley Freeman won the 400 meters (54.37) in an NCAA regional qualifying time of 54.37. Stanford runners finished 1-2-3 in the 200 meters. Nashonme Johnson, competing in her first outdoor event of the 2004 season, paced the Cardinal victory with a time of 24.75. Keisha Gaines was second (25.04), and Christine Moschella was third (25.29). Leila Ben-Youssef qualified for regionals with a leap of 12-3 1/2 (3.75m) in the pole vault.

In other news, Arizona's Robert Cheseret produced the world's best time this year in the 10,000 meters. Cheserest beat 30 other runners in a time of 28:25.62. Simon Bairu of Wisconsin finished second at 28:28.69.

Saturday's events start at 9:00 a.m. with the high school girls 400 meter hurdles and will conclude with the high school boys 1,600 meter relay at 5:15 p.m. Collegiate events start at 11:45 a.m. with the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase, and end at 5:00 p.m. with the men's 1,600 meter relay.

Stanford just finished the 2004 indoor season, and the Cardinal enjoyed another successful season ... The Cardinal women won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title and finished seventh at the NCAA Indoor Nationals at Arkansas ... Sara Bei finished second in the mile, Jill Camarena finished second in the shot put and Alicia Craig finished second in the 5,000 meters to gain All-America honors ... The distance medley relay team of Kathleen Trotter, Chinny Offor, Katie Hotchkiss and Sara Bei finished second to gain All-American accolades ... The Stanford men finished third at the MPSF meet and 19th at the NCAA Indoors ... Freshmen Amanda Trotter and her twin sister, Katy Trotter, competed for the United States at the recent World Junior Cross Country Championships in Belgium ... The U.S. women finished fourth, the highest U.S. finish since 1995 ... Amanda finished as the team's third runner and 31st overall, while Katy was the team's fifth runner and 36th overall ... Freshman Forrest Tahdooahnippah competed for the U.S. Junior men's team, and was the team's second runner, only two seconds behind the top American finisher ... Tahdooahnippah finished 37th.
