STANFORD, Calif. - The top-ranked and unbeaten Stanford Cardinal snapped No. 8 USC's nine-match win streak by defeating the Trojans 6-1 today in a non-conference match-up at the Taube Tennis Center. With the victory, Stanford runs its season record to a perfect 18-0.
The team of Barnes and Liu opened doubles competition by posting an 8-1 victory over USC's Anastasiu and Matias. Anderson and Yelsey defeated DeVera and Bayani 8-4 to secure the doubles point for Stanford, and the nation's top-ranked duo Barnikow and Burdette topped No. 12 Magnani and Vermeulen 8-5.
Although Stanford swept doubles play, singles action was closely contested throughout the afternoon. No. 19 Erin Burdette downed No. 64 Anca Anastasiu 6-3, 6-1, and No. 24 Theresa Logar beat the Trojans' Judy DeVera by the same score to give the Cardinal the team's first singles victories. No. 67 Emilia Anderson's 6-4,7-5 win over Melissa Esmero clinched the match win for Stanford. No. 36 Lauren Barnikow overcame a 4-6 loss in the first set to defeat Dianne Matias 6-3, 6-3. No. 33 Amber Liu earned a hard fought 7-6, 6-7, 1-0 victory over No. 13 Luana Magnani. USC's Carine Vermeulen defeated No. 15 Alice Barnes 6-3, 6-3.
The Cardinal will next host No. 9 UCLA in a non-conference match-up at the Taube Tennis Center on Saturday, April 3 at noon. The Bruins' record currently stands at 11-5 and the squad has won five consecutive matches.
