Lowrie And Mayberry, Jr. Invited To 2004 USA Baseball National Team Trials

Durham, N.C. - Stanford baseball players Jed Lowrie (Salem, OR/North Salem HS) and John Mayberry, Jr. (Kansas City, MO/Rockhurst HS) were announced Thursday as two of 19 invitees to the 2004 USA Baseball National Team Trials to be held June 20-26 in Durham, North Carolina. The USA Baseball National Team will be selected from a pool of 36 players, of which an additional 17 have yet to be determined. The USA Baseball National Team will open play at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Wednesday, June 23 (7:00 pm, EDT). Team USA will also play an additional seven games in Durham, along with several more domestic exhibition games prior to representing the United States at 2004 II FISU World University Baseball Championships in Chinese Taipei, July 23 - August 1.

Lowrie, a sophomore second baseman, is having an incredible campaign and is a 2004 National Player of the Year Candidate listed on "Watch Lists" for Baseball America's Player of the Year and USA Baseball's Golden Spikes Award. He leads the Cardinal in nearly every offensive category, including batting average (.399), homers (13) and RBI (53). He also sets the pace for the Pac-10 in the latter two categories. Lowrie has started all 38 games, primarily at second base, and also leads the team with 113 assists while making just six errors in 178 defensive chances for a .966 fielding percentage. He earned his first national weekly honor when he was named the NCBWA National Co-Hitter of the Week on March 2 after going 7-for-10 (.700) with six runs scored, three triples and seven RBI.

John Mayberry, Jr. (.347, 10 HR, 44 RBI, 7 SB) has been selected as one of 19 invitees to the 2004 USA Baseball National Team Trials

Mayberry, a sophomore first baseman, has earned his reputation as one of the nation's top collegiate baseball players this season, ranking second on the Cardinal with 10 homers (shares second place), 44 RBI and seven stolen bases. He has also added a .613 slugging percentage that ranks third on the club and a .347 batting average. He is hitting .441 with team-highs of four homers and 15 RBI in nine Pac-10 contests, while adding two stolen bases.

Stanford has produced 22 members of the USA National Baseball Team in the history of the squad, more than any other collegiate baseball program in the nation. Three current Stanford players - Sam Fuld (2001, '02), Mark Romanczuk (2003), Danny Putnam (2003) - have participated with Team USA.

Stanford (32-6) has the second-best record in school history after 38 games and is leading the Pac-10 with a 7-2 mark. After four consecutive non-conference games, the Cardinal returns to Pac-10 action by hosting Washington State this Friday-Sunday (6 pm, 1 pm, 12 pm, PDT). Stanford has won 10 straight games at Sunken Diamond and has a 17-1 home record this season.
