STANFORD, Calif. - The top-ranked Stanford Cardinal extended their season record to 19-0 with a 7-0 victory over No. 9 UCLA today at the Taube Tennis Center. This was Stanford's third win over highly ranked opposition this week, as the Cardinal had previously beaten No. 11 California and No. 8 USC.
The Cardinal earned the doubles point on the strength of wins by top-ranked duo Barnikow and Burdette, who were 8-5 winners over Bercek and Fisher, and the team of Anderson and Yelsey, who downed Gregg and Gordon 9-7. UCLA's Carleton and Esseghir defeated Barnes and Liu 8-5.
In singles action, No. 24 Theresa Logar raised her dual record to 18-0 with her 6-1, 6-2 win over the Bruins' Lauren Fisher. No. 19 Erin Burdette was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Feriel Esseghir. No. 36 Lauren Barnikow clinched the match for the Cardinal and improved to 19-0 in dual competition by virtue of her 6-2, 6-4 victory over UCLA's Sarah Gregg. No. 33 Amber Liu topped No. 14 Jackie Carleton in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. After dropping her first set to Laura Gordon 4-6, No. 67 Emilia Anderson rallied to win 6-3, 1-0. No. 15 Alice Barnes battled back after being shutout in the first set to win 6-4, 6-4 over No. 44 Daniela Bercek.
Unbeaten Stanford will resume action on Friday, April 9 when the squad hosts Pac-10 rival No. 36 Arizona at the Taube Tennis Center at 1:30 p.m. The Cardinal defeated the Wildcats 6-1 in Tucson on March 6 when the two teams last met in non-conference play.
