DENVER, Colo. - The No. 2 ranked Stanford University women's gymnastics team advanced to the NCAA Championship on April 15-17 by capturing first place with a score of 196.575 at the NCAA North Central Regional Saturday night in Denver, CO at the Magness Arena. The victory marks Stanford's third NCAA regional championship, the last coming in 2002 on the very floor they competed on Saturday night.
The Cardinal were led by a trio of All-Americans in seniors Lise L?veill?, Caroline Fluhrer and Lindsay Wing. L?veill? captured first place in the all-around with a score of 39.425, while Fluhrer and Wing were right behind her, finishing second and third in the all-around with scores of 39.350 and 39.250, respectively.
The Cardinal began the meet on the balance beam, an event that they entered the evening ranked No. 2 in the country on. Stanford racked up a team score of 49.150 on the beam, the top score of the evening. Senior All-American Kendall Beck started things off for the Cardinal registering a 9.825, followed by a 9.800 by Fluhrer. L?veill? and Wing showed why they are two of the best performers on the beam in the country by posting scores of 9.900 and 9.925, respectively. Wing's score was the highest on the beam on the evening.
After a bye in the second rotation, the Cardinal moved to the floor exercise where they tallied a team score of 49.125. Senior Shelly Goldberg started the Cardinal with a 9.725. Wing then followed with a 9.800, while sophomore Jessica Louie, Fluhrer and Englewood, CO native, sophomore All-American Natalie Foley, all earned identical scores of 9.825. L?veill? capped Stanford's floor rotation with a 9.850.
The Cardinal moved to the vault in the fourth rotation where they earned a team score of 49.150. Goldberg and Fluhrer each recorded scores of 9.750, followed by Wing who scored a 9.725. L?veill? scored a 9.850, but the best performances of the night came from Louie and Foley who tied for the meet-high score, each earning a 9.900.
After a bye in the fifth rotation, the Cardinal ended the night on the uneven bars, an event in which they are ranked No. 4 in the country. Looking to seal the win, Stanford got off to a good start with Louie registering a 9.850. Also turning in strong performances on the bars for the Cardinal were L?veill? with a 9.825, Fluhrer with a 9.875, but it was Wing who turned in the best performance of the night with a 9.900 for top honors.
Stanford Head Coach Kristen Smyth was named the West Regional coach of the, while Associate Athletic Director Scott Schuhman was tabbed Administrator of the Year.
The Cardinal look to advance to their second Super Six in program history when they compete at the NCAA Championship at UCLA on April 15-17th.
