Stanford, Calif. - Senior pitcher Dana Sorensen struck out 14 batters as the No. 1 seeded Stanford softball team defeated Utah, 1-0, tonight at the NCAA Softball Regional held at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium in Stanford, Calif.
The Cardinal improve to 44-16 on the year while the Utes fall to 23-32.
Stanford scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth innings when Lauren Lappin opened the inning with a single to leftfield. Lappin advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jessica Allister walked to put runners on first and second. With one out, Elizabeth Bendig singled to right, scoring Lappin.
Dana Sorensen (29-9) picked up the win for Stanford, pitching a complete game three-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts on the night. Brianna Gourdin (18-8) took the loss for Utah, allowing one run on five hits with five strikeouts.
Elizabeth Bendig went 1-for-3 with an RBI on the night while Lauren Lappin also had a 1-for-3 day at the plate with a run scored. Heather Shook went 1-for-2 with a walk as well.
Glennis Donnelly went 1-for-2 to lead the Utes.
Stanford will take on Pacific tomorrow in the 3 p.m game while Utah will take on Southern Mississippi at 10 a.m.
