Opelika, Ala. - The Stanford women's golf team currently sits tied for 13th with six holes left as competition was halted on Friday night due to darkness at the NCAA Women's Golf Championships in Opelika, Alabama. The second-ranked UCLA Bruins hold a three-stroke lead over top-ranked Duke with 10 holes left. The Bruins sit at even-par after shooting a composite plus-six on the weather-shortened day. The final round will be completed on Saturday morning at the Grand National Lake Course.
Oklahoma State sits one shot behind Duke at plus-four for the tournament.
Cal's Sarah Huarte is the individual leader at minus-11 after shooting a 4-under on 12 holes on Friday, which included birdies on Nos. 2, 8, 9, and 12. She is five strokes ahead of Oklahoma State's Sjodin, who is at minus-6 for the championships. UCLA's Mathews sits next in line at 5-under with 10 holes to play.
The top 12 teams after the third round are all still playing while the bottom 12 from Thursday's round all completed the championships. No. 12 Washington carded the lowest round of those that finished, posting a 284, which is the third best round in school history and the best ever in program history at the NCAA Championships. Paige Mackenzie shot a 68 on the final round with birdies on Nos. 3, 4, 9 and 14 and an eagle on the par-5, 460-yard 12th hole. Two other Cowgirls, Lindsay Morgan and Ashley Bickerton, both finished at minus-2 in the final round.
Adrienne Millican of East Carolina is the only other player in the clubhouse with a sub-70 round, firing a 69 with birdies on Nos. 5, 6, 9, and 15 and an eagle on No. 12.
Stanford's Stephanie Lue sits at three-over par with four holes left (holes six through nine) while teammate Jennifer Tangtiphaiboontana is six-over on the day with five holes left to play. Freshman Lauren Todd has six holes left to play and is one-over par. Senior Angela Rho is at even-par with five holes left to play while teammate Kim Kouwabunpat is six over with four left.
Play was halted for 3 hours and 33 minutes due to lightening in the area in the afternoon. During the weather delay the teams found multiple ways to amuse themselves, including Florida State's limbo exhibition in the clubhouse lobby.
The conclusion of the final round of the NCAA Championship begins at 8:00 a.m. Tickets can be purchased for half-price at the course ($4 for adults, $2 for youth/student with ID).
