Sara Bei Wins NCAA West Regional 5,000 Meter Title

Northridge, Ca - For the second straight season, Stanford's Sara Bei is the 5,000 meter champion at the NCAA Western Regional Track & Field Championships at Cal State Northridge.

Bei, a junior who recently won the Pac-10 5,000 meter crown, easily won the competition by more than 12 seconds on Friday over runnerup Laura Turner of BYU. Bei was timed in 16:12.26 while Turner checked in at 16:24.59. The victory earned Bei a trip to the NCAA Championships from June 9-12 at the University of Texas. The top five finishers qualify for the NCAA's in Austin.

Seth Hejny and Louis Luchini also earned trips to the NCAA's with second and third place finishes, respectively, in the men's 5,000 meters. Hejny was timed in 14:10.82 while Luchini checked in at 14:13.05. Arizona's Robert Cheseret won the competition in a time of 14:09.86.

After five scoring events, Stanford women's team is in fourth place with 15 points. UCLA leads with 36 points. The Cardinal men's team is fourth with 19 points. USC leads with 37 points.

The NCAA Western Regionals continue on Saturday with field events starting at 8:30 a.m. and running events beginning at 3:30 p.m.
